IGP

Intermediate Regions & Terroir

Definition

Indication Géographique Protégée — a European protected geographical indication.

Im Detail

The middle tier between table wine and AOC/DOC. IGP (Vin de Pays in France, IGT in Italy) allows greater winemaking freedom — more grape varieties, higher yields, and innovative techniques. Many exceptional wines are classified IGP because they don't conform to stricter appellation rules. Super Tuscans (Sassicaia, Tignanello) were originally classified IGT.
