From cuve (vat/tank). In Champagne, tête de cuvée means the top prestige bottling. Elsewhere, cuvée can mean any specific blend or lot. Some producers use 'cuvée' for marketing distinction. In traditional pressing, the first 2,050L from 4,000kg of grapes is called the cuvée (best quality); the next 500L is the taille.
