Grafting

Intermediate Grapes & Varieties

Definição

Joining a fruiting vine (scion) to a disease-resistant rootstock.

Em Profundidade

After phylloxera devastated European vineyards in the 1860s-1890s, grafting European vinifera vines onto resistant American rootstock became standard. Almost all commercial vineyards worldwide are grafted. Rare exceptions include Chile, parts of Australia, and sandy soils where phylloxera cannot survive. Rootstock selection affects vine vigor, drought tolerance, and fruit quality.
