Cru Classé
Intermediate Regions & Terroirkroo klah-SAY
Definition
A classified growth, a château ranked in an official classification.
Im Detail
The most famous is Bordeaux's 1855 Classification, which ranked 61 Médoc châteaux and one Graves (Haut-Brion) into five tiers. Remarkably, it has been amended only once (Mouton-Rothschild promoted to First Growth in 1973). Saint-Émilion's classification is revised roughly every decade. These classifications heavily influence pricing and reputation.
