AVA

Beginner Regions & Terroir

Definición

American Viticultural Area — a designated wine region in the United States.

En Profundidad

Established by the TTB (Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau), AVAs define geographic boundaries based on distinguishing features like climate, soil, and elevation. Unlike European appellations, AVAs impose no restrictions on grape varieties, yields, or winemaking. There are 280+ AVAs. Using an AVA name requires 85% of grapes from that area. Napa Valley was among the first designated in 1981.
