Corked

Beginner Tasting & Sensory

Definición

A wine contaminated by TCA, giving it a musty, damp cardboard smell.

En Profundidad

Cork taint (2,4,6-trichloroanisole) affects an estimated 1-3% of wines sealed with natural cork. At low levels, TCA merely mutes fruit without obvious mustiness. At higher concentrations, the wine smells distinctly of wet newspaper or damp basement. The wine is safe to drink but unpleasant. Screw caps and synthetic corks eliminate this risk.
