The punt's purpose is debated. Historical explanations include structural strength (preventing the bottom from bulging), stability, and sediment collection. Deeper punts are associated with premium wines but have no quality correlation. Sparkling wine bottles require deep punts for structural integrity against internal pressure (6 atmospheres).
