Legs
Beginner Tasting & SensoryDéfinition
The streaks of wine that run down the inside of a glass after swirling.
En Détail
Also called tears or curtains. Legs are caused by the Marangoni effect — differences in surface tension between alcohol and water. Thicker, slower legs indicate higher alcohol or sugar content, not quality. Despite popular belief, legs tell you nothing about a wine's taste or value. They are a physical phenomenon, not a quality indicator.
