Biodynamic

Intermediate Winemaking & Viticulture

Definition

A holistic farming philosophy treating the vineyard as a self-sustaining organism.

In Depth

Founded by Rudolf Steiner in 1924, biodynamics goes beyond organic farming to include cosmic rhythms (planting by moon phases), specific preparations (horn manure, horn silica), and treating the farm as a living whole. Certified by Demeter. Major practitioners include Domaine Leroy, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, and Nicolas Joly. Controversial but producing many acclaimed wines.
