Château
Beginner Regions & Terroirsha-TOH
Definition
A wine estate in Bordeaux, regardless of whether an actual castle exists.
In Depth
In Bordeaux, château refers to the wine-producing property, not necessarily a grand building. Château Pétrus is a modest farmhouse; Château Margaux is a neoclassical palace. There are roughly 7,000 châteaux in Bordeaux. The term implies estate-grown and estate-bottled wine. Outside Bordeaux, château usage is regulated differently by country.
