Cru
Intermediate Regions & TerroirKROO
Definition
A French term for a vineyard or group of vineyards of recognized quality.
In Depth
Cru literally means 'growth' (from the soil). In Burgundy, Grand Cru (33 vineyards) and Premier Cru (600+ vineyards) designate superior sites. In Bordeaux, the 1855 Classification ranked châteaux as Premier through Cinquième Cru. In Beaujolais, 10 cru villages produce the finest wines. The term indicates site quality, not wine quality — great crus can produce mediocre wine in poor vintages.
