Diurnal Range
Intermediate Grapes & VarietiesDefinition
The difference between day and night temperatures.
In Depth
Wide diurnal ranges (15-20°C difference) are prized for quality grape growing. Warm days promote sugar accumulation and flavor development; cool nights preserve acidity and aromatic compounds. Regions with large diurnal ranges include Mendoza, Walla Walla, Barossa Valley, and many high-altitude vineyards. This temperature swing is one of terroir's most important factors.
