Earthy

Intermediate Tasting & Sensory

Definition

Aromas or flavors reminiscent of soil, mushroom, or forest floor.

In Depth

Earthiness in wine can come from terroir (mineral-rich soils), winemaking (extended maceration), or aging (tertiary development). Positive earthy notes include truffle, mushroom, wet stone, and damp earth. Excessive earthiness may indicate a fault. Old World wines (Burgundy, Barolo, Rioja) tend to show more earth than fruit-forward New World styles.
