Buying wine as futures before it is bottled.

The Bordeaux en primeur system allows buyers to purchase wine 18-24 months before delivery, typically at lower prices than eventual release. Based on barrel tastings each spring, prices are set by châteaux. The system provides winemakers with cash flow and buyers with potential value — but prices don't always appreciate. Most relevant for top Bordeaux and increasingly Burgundy.
