Flinty

Intermediate Tasting & Sensory

Definition

A mineral-like character reminiscent of struck flint.

In Depth

Flinty notes are most associated with Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre from the Loire Valley, where Sauvignon Blanc grows on silex (flint) soils. The French word fumé (smoky) references this character. Whether flinty aromas truly come from soil minerals is debated scientifically, but the descriptor is widely used and understood.
