Grip

Intermediate Tasting & Sensory

Definition

Firm tannin structure that creates a holding sensation on the palate.

In Depth

Grip is a tactile quality — tannic wines literally seem to grip the inside of your cheeks and gums. Young Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, and Tannat have intense grip. Unlike harsh astringency, quality grip feels firm but not unpleasant and promises excellent aging potential. It is a structural virtue in age-worthy reds.
