Jammy

Beginner Tasting & Sensory

Definition

Thick, sweet, concentrated fruit character in red wine.

In Depth

Jammy wines taste like cooked or preserved fruit rather than fresh. This results from very ripe grapes, warm climates, or extended maceration. Australian Shiraz, Zinfandel, and Malbec often show jammy character. Some critics use 'jammy' dismissively to describe overripe wines, while others consider it a desirable richness.
