Definition
A named locality or vineyard site, not officially classified.
In Depth
French term for a specific place name, often appearing on wine labels below appellation level. Unlike Burgundy's climat system, lieux-dits may or may not carry quality significance. In Alsace and the Rhône, lieu-dit labeling helps identify specific sites. Some lieux-dits have become so associated with quality that they function as unofficial crus.
