Négociant

Intermediate Regions & Terroir

neh-go-SYAHN

Definition

A wine merchant who buys grapes, juice, or wine to blend and sell.

In Depth

Négociants play a crucial role, especially in Burgundy and Champagne, where vineyard holdings are fragmented. Top négociants (Louis Jadot, Joseph Drouhin, Bouchard Père & Fils) produce excellent wines by selecting the best lots from multiple growers. The négociant system allows access to diverse terroirs without owning vineyards, but quality varies enormously.
