Old World

Beginner History & Culture

Definition

Traditional European wine-producing regions.

In Depth

France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Austria, Greece, and other European wine countries with centuries of viticultural history. Old World wines are stereotypically terroir-driven, earth-forward, and regulated by appellation systems. Generalization is risky — an oaky Languedoc and a mineral Chablis are both French but stylistically opposite. The Old/New World division oversimplifies wine's rich global diversity.
