Silky

Intermediate Tasting & Sensory

Definition

An extremely smooth, fine-grained texture on the palate.

In Depth

Silky is the highest compliment for tannin texture. It describes tannins so fine-grained and polished that they feel like liquid silk. Pinot Noir from great Burgundy sites, aged Barolo, and top Merlot exemplify silky texture. Silkiness develops through physiological ripeness of tannins in the vineyard and careful extraction during winemaking.
