Toasty

Beginner Tasting & Sensory

Definition

Warm, baked-bread flavors from oak barrel aging.

In Depth

Toast character comes from the charring (toasting) of oak barrel interiors during cooperage. Light toast produces subtle vanilla; medium toast adds caramel and spice; heavy toast contributes smoke and dark chocolate. Champagne aged extended time on lees also develops toasty, brioche-like character from autolysis rather than oak.
