Trellising

Intermediate Winemaking & Viticulture

Definition

The system of wires and posts that supports grapevine growth.

In Depth

Trellis design affects vine vigor, fruit exposure, disease pressure, and harvest efficiency. Common systems include VSP (Vertical Shoot Positioning), Geneva Double Curtain, Scott Henry, and Lyre. Each optimizes canopy management for specific conditions. Head-trained, free-standing vines (gobelet) require no trellis and are traditional in Mediterranean climates.
