The European grapevine species responsible for virtually all fine wine.
In Depth
Vitis vinifera originated in the Caucasus region and has been cultivated for 8,000+ years. It includes an estimated 5,000-10,000 cultivars, from Aglianico to Zweigelt. Vinifera produces the finest wine but is susceptible to phylloxera and many fungal diseases. Other Vitis species (labrusca, riparia, rupestris) are used for rootstock and hybrid breeding.
