Dry

Beginner Tasting & Sensory

Definition

A wine with little or no residual sugar, less than 4 grams per liter.

In Depth

Dry is the most common wine style globally. It means the yeast consumed virtually all grape sugar during fermentation. Confusingly, a wine can smell fruity while being technically dry — fruit aroma does not equal sweetness. Many consumers who say they prefer sweet wine actually enjoy fruity dry wines. Understanding this distinction is fundamental to wine literacy.
