Second Wine

Intermediate Wine Business & Trade

Definition

A less expensive wine from a top estate, made from declassified lots.

In Depth

Bordeaux's top châteaux produce second wines from younger vines, less-favored parcels, or barrels that don't meet Grand Vin standards. Pauillac's second wines (Petit Mouton, Les Forts de Latour, Pavillon Rouge) offer a taste of the estate style at lower prices. The practice has expanded beyond Bordeaux to producers worldwide. Second wines represent excellent value when the grand vin is unaffordable.
